Our Family Business

Smith Crane and Construction is proud to be a multi generational family business. Smith Crane and Construction traces it’s roots back to John C Smith Contractors founded by Tim’s Father.

Smith Crane and Construction is proud to continue the family tradition of excellence in the provision of crane hire, piling, civil construction and heavy haulage services.

Formed by Tim Smith in 1993

Tim Smith comes from a construction family and is a qualified diesel mechanic. In 1993, he founded Smith Crane and Construction Ltd with just one Kato NK20B crane and a passion for getting the job done.

Over the past 33 years, Smith Crane and Construction has grown from that one crane into a business with more than 180 cranes, over 700 plant and equipment items, and a team of around 300 people who make up the Silver Team.

Our Office

In 1997, we relocated to our 12-hectare premises at 484 Johns Road, Harewood, Christchurch. Since then, we’ve continued to grow steadily, building a strong reputation for delivering professional, high-quality services while growing an exceptional team.

Today, we also have offices in Auckland, Wellington, Queenstown and Invercargill.
