First Vestas V162-6.4MW Turbines Rise at Kaiwaikawe Wind Farm

New Zealand’s largest lattice boom crawler crane, the Liebherr LR11000, is proving its capability at the Kaiwaikawe Wind Farm, with two turbines now successfully completed since lifting operations commenced after Easter.

This project marks the installation of the first Vestas V162-6.4MW turbines in New Zealand, featuring blade lengths of approximately 80 metres and a total turbine height of around 205 metres. The scope of works includes foundation grouting, mechanical installation, electrical installation, and major crane lifts of components exceeding 100 tonnes.

Main erection, mechanical, and electrical works have been completed on WTG 12. WTG 08 has also reached main erection completion and is now in the final stages of electrical /mechanical completion works. The LR11000 is currently working at WTG 09, which is progressing well following the recent installation of the nacelle and is not far behind in reaching completion.

The LR11000’s lifting capacity and ease of movement are helping maintain strong progress across the site.

The SCC team is consistently going above and beyond, demonstrating strong commitment and sustained effort to keep the programme on track and ensure efficient use of time and resources as the project continues to move forward at pace.
