Project of the Year 2025: Te Kaha Christchurch Stadium
Smith Crane and Construction was proud to win the 2025 Project of the Year award from the New Zealand Crane Association Crane Awards.
The One New Zealand Stadium at the Te Kaha site in Christchurch, is a significant development in the city's post-earthquake revitalization efforts. Scheduled to open in April 2026, this state-of-the-art arena is designed to host a variety of events, including sports, concerts, and conferences. The stadium has a capacity of 30,000 seats covered by a roof for events all year round.
The main contract for the stadium was awarded to BESIX Watpac. The steel roof of the stadium was awarded to Jing Gong Steel International from China. Smith Crane and Construction was engaged by Jing Gong Steel International to provide crane hire services for the nine thousand tonne of steel making up the roof of the stadium starting from December 2023 to February 2025.
Overall, this project was successful, with the 9000 tonne of steel being installed. SCC was proud to not only complete all lifts but have no health and safety incidents on this project. This was attributed to the commitment from our team on site to maintain the highest safety standards in all aspects of their work.
This project has allowed SCC to gain valuable experience and knowledge in the construction of large-scale stadiums and has been a great challenge for all involved. This project displayed the capabilities of our extensive fleet of cranes and our talented employees. SCC would like to thank our valued Client Jing Gong Steel International for selecting us to complete this complex project and looks forward to working with Jing Gong in the future.
Congratulations to Johnny Smith and the Term Hire team for all of their hard work on this project. Thanks to our valued client, Jing Gong Steel International.
